Tasks of Work Package 4

Last edited 29 January 2004

T4.1: Comparison of tide gauges: at selected sites, a pilot station will be established in order to test different kinds of tide gauges: acoustic, radar, pressure sensor, etc. This station will be in operation for one year, and results from these comparisons will be used to decide in task 4.2 on the upgrading of gauges (P5, P6).

T4.2: Upgrading tide gauge stations: A number of important ESEAS sites (in areas with sparce coverage, particular geographic locations, long-term gauges) are still analog gauges or even manual. It is planned to upgrade these gauges to up-to-date digital gauges. The sensor will be selected on the basis of the result from T4.1 (P8, P9, P10, P12, P13, P15, P17, P18).

T4.3: Co-location of tide gauge stations with GPS: Application A and C gauges need to be co-located with GPS in order to be able to measure absolute sea level changes or to provide sea level in the same reference frame as the satellite altimeters. Selected ESEAS sites determined in WP1, task 1.1, will be co-located with permanent CGPS (P1, P4, P5, P6, P8, P9, P10, P11, P12, P15, P17, P18, P20).

T4.4: GPS Campaigns at tide gauges: At some tide gauges, GPS campaigns will be carried out in order to connect the tide gauges to a global reference frame (P7, P9, P15, P18, P20).
