The European Sea Level Service and the EC-funded
ESEAS-Research Infrastructure
project are jointly organising a Workshop on "Observing and Understanding Sea Level Variations to be
held on 1-3 November 2004 at the San Gorg Corinthia Hotel, Malta.
The Workshop will preceed the ESEAS-RI Project Team Meeting on 4 November and the ESEAS Governing Board meeting on 5 November 2004.
The Workshop offers an opportunity to discuss recent developments in the observation of sea level variations, the analysis of
the data and the interpretation of the phenomena in terms of the driving processes. Topics will include the observation of
local sea level changes, the decontamination of these observations for particularly vertical land motion, the observation of
sea level on regional and global scale, the determination of regional and global patterns in sea level variations on the basis
of tide gauge and satellite altimetry observations, and studies of processes causing intra-annual to multi-decadal sea level
variations.
The workshop is open for all researchers working in sea level studies or applications related to sea-level. Participation from
groups working in other sea-level related projects, such as for example the NASA Sea Level Projects, is particularly welcome in
order to exchange information between these projects.

The Programme
Preliminary Programme Overview
(for more details, the full programme will be available here after 1 October 2004))
Topics include comparison of tide gauge sensors, calibration of tide gauges, aspect of real time operation,
homogeneity over time.
Topics include monitoring vertical land movement, GPS analysis strategy, reference frame issues, determination of secular trends,
non-linear motions, modelling of geophysical processes such as post-glacial rebound.
Topics include developments in satellite altimetry, calibration of satellite altimetry, validation, data analysis.
Topics include description of main interannual modes in regional sea level, on basin-scale, and globally, temporal variability
of these modes and relation of coastal to off-shore sea-level variations on time scales of decades.
Topics include modelling of steric sea level variations on seasonal to century time scales, modelling mass exchange between the ocean and
other reservoirs, constraining sea level variations with observations such as Earth rotation changes, gravity changes, surface displacements.
Topics include atmospheric forcing of sea level variations on interannual to century time scale, forcing of sea level due to ocean circulation changes,
forcing of sea level variations due to mass exchanges.
