The 10th session of the Group Experts for the Global Sea Level Observing System
The 10th session of the Group Experts for the Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS GE X) will be convened at the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, at UNESCO, Paris, from 6 to 8 June 2007.
In connection with the GLOSS GE X session a workshop will be held on 5 June 2007 (also at UNESCO, Paris) on “Workshop on Real-time Transmission and Processing Techniques: Improving the Global Sea Level Observing System’s contribution to multi-hazard warning systems”.

Job Opportunity - Sea Level Scientist/Program Coordinator
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO is recruiting a sea level scientist/program coordinator for regional sea level training activities and for assistance with regional sea level product/service developments as part of the IOC Tsunami Programmes in the Indian Ocean and the NE Atlantic, Mediterranean and Connected Seas.

7th ESEAS Governing Board Meeting
The 7th ESEAS Governing Board meeting will take place in Cyprus 5 - 6 October 2006. As agreed in Split we will be holding the ESEAS Governing Board meeting in conjunction with the annual EuroGOOS meeting between 2 - 5 October 2006. The draft agenda for the ESEAS GB7 meeting is available here.
TRANSFER project rewarded
The ESEAS involved project application TRANSFER has been funded. The aim of the project is to transfer knowledge about sea level observation between regions. More information will be available soon.

ESEAS web pages has got a new graphical look. For the convenience of our readers we keep the content pretty much as before, with only some minor tidying. The principle of simplicity still is valid - it should be easy to access our site from any kind of platform.

The Third Call for Participation in ESEAS
At the ESEAS Governing Board meeting in Paris, 10. June 2005, the basis for the 3rd Call for Participation in ESEAS including Terms of Reference was discussed and agreed upon.
A third Call for Participation(.doc) soliciting proposals for National Centres, Analysis and Supporting Centres, as well as Network and Product Coordinators was issued on 16. July 2005 with deadline for proposals on 6. October 2005. The proposals received were reviewed at the sixth ESEAS Governing Board meeting held 7-8 October 2005 in Split, Croatia.
Friday 7 October 2005, the ESEAS Governing Board constituted the ESEAS based on the reconfirmations of contributions from existing members of ESEAS. It was decided that ESEAS members that did not send a signed and authorized proposal should do that within 4th November 2005. Furthermore it was decided that the Call should be open until the end of this year, giving the Central Bureau and the Chair time to consider also the additional contributions and the proposals from new member organizations to ESEAS. Recommendations of new contributions will be presented to the Governing Board by email procedure.
From 1st January 2006 the ESEAS is open to organizations according to the former procedures. The ESEAS web site will include instructions on how to apply for membership with application formulas and the Governing Board will accept/decline the proposals using an email procedure if possible, based on the recommendations made by the ESEAS Central Bureau.
For your convenience we make One example(.pdf) available to facilitate submitting a proposal to this Call for Participation. The Governing Board of ESEAS will continuously review the proposals submitted under this call until 31. December 2005. All proposals should be submitted by mail to:

Second workshop
The second workshop jointly organized by European Sea Level Service (ESEAS) and the EC-funded project ESEAS-Research Infrastructure (ESEAS-RI) was held at Art Hotel, Split, Croatia 5-6 October, 2005. Close to 70 participants from 20 countries participated at the workshop.
There were 50 oral presentations and posters presented in this two-day long workshop. A Book of Abstracts (pdf) is now available. To search a single abstract and more information about workshop, please visit here.

The final ESEAS-RI Project Team Meeting took place 7 October, 2005 at the Art Hotel, Split, Croatia. The project will end in October 2005 after running for three year

The sixth Governing Board meeting took place at the Art Hotel, Split 7-8 October, 2005. Representatives from Russia and France had been invited and attended the meeting as observers. More information about the meeting will be available soon.
October 2005: Second Workshop
The European Sea Level Service and the EC-funded ESEAS-Research Infrastructure project are jointly organising the second Workshop on "Sea Level Variations: Towards an Operational European Sea Level Service to be held on 5-6 October 2005 at the Art Hotel, Split, Croatia. The Workshop will preceed the final ESEAS-RI Project Team Meeting on 7 October and the sixth ESEAS Governing Board meeting on 7-8 October. Local organisation and facilities are managed by the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries and Hydrographic and Institute of the Republic of Croatia, both in Split, and Andrija Mohorovicic Geophysical Institute in Zagreb.
The Workshop offers an opportunity to discuss recent developments in the observation of sea level variations, the analysis of the data and the interpretation of the phenomena in terms of the driving processes. Topics will include tide gauges and instrumentation, data maintenance and quality control, reference frames and vertical land movements, satellite altimetry, extreme events and floods, measuring and modelling interannual sea level variations and trends, managing the sea level and public awareness.
The workshop is open for all researchers working in sea level studies or applications related to sea-level. Participation from groups working in other sea-level related projects is particularly welcome in order to exchange information between the projects.

June 2005: the 5th ESEAS Governing Board meeting

May 2005: ESEAS-RI project team meeting

February 2005: GMES
ESEAS and ESEAS-RI have been included in the GMES initial services demonstrators and Earth & Space Expo for Earth & Space Week, which takes place, 12-20 February 2005 in Brussels. This major European Commission and European Space Agency (ESA) initiative is aimed at showing how Earth Observation and Space initiatives improve the quality of life on the planet.
January 2005: Tsunami data
ESEAS and ESEAS-RI have started to collect data from the ESEAS Observing Sites to see if we can detect signals from the Indian Ocean Tsunami. The data will be analysed in co-operation with the global sea level scientific network. Tide gauge data from the period between December 25th to January 1st is now available here.
November 2004:The Fifth ESEAS Governing Board meeting
The Fifth ESEAS Governing Board meeting took place 5 November 2004 in St. Julians, Malta. The meeting was held subsequent to the ESEAS-RI Project Team meeting and the first ESEAS-RI Workshop. Based on the experience from the ESEAS pilot project and the subsequent assessment report from Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Plag, The Governing Board decided that ESEAS should become a permanent service. The formal procedures will take place the next few months. Dr. Per Knudsen from the Danish National Space Centre, Department of Geodesy was elected new chairman of the ESEAS Governing Board. October 2004: ESEAS Meetings - Malta
During the first week of November 2004, three meetings organised by the ESEAS and ESEAS-RI will take place in Malta. These meetings are the first Workshop on "Observing and understanding sea level variations", the fourth ESEAS-RI Project Team Meeting, and the 5th ESEAS Governing Board Meeting. October 2004: ESEAS-RI WP2 meeting
ESEAS-RI WP2 meeting will be held at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona on 15 October, 2004.
July 2004: New Coordinator for the ESEAS-RI Project.
Bente-Lilja Bye of the Norwegian Mapping Authority is the new coordinator of the EC funded project ESEAS Research Infrastructure (ESEAS-RI). The former coordinator, Hans-Peter Plag has moved on toa new position at the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, University of Nevada, Reno, USA. However, he will continue to be associated to the project as externa expert in the Project team.
July 2004: New Director for the ESEAS Central Bureau.
The ESEAS Central Bureau hosted by the Norwegian Mapping Authority, Honefoss, Norway, has a new director: Bente-Lilja Bye. The former director, Hans-Peter Plag has moved on to a new position at the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, University of Nevada, Reno, USA.
ESEAS Pilot Project extended to January 2005.
The ESEAS Pilot Project, which was set up in July 2001 for a period of three years has been extended by six months until January 2005. The ESEAS Governing Board will meet in November 2004 and decide on the continuation of the ESEAS after the end of the Pilot Project.

The 3rd Project Team meeting was held on 13-14 May 2004, subsequent to the Eurocean conference (10-13 May 2004) in Galway.

The ESEAS-RI kickoff meeting will be held on 11-12 November 2002 in Istanbul, Turkey. Subsequently, the Third Meeting of the ESEAS Governing Board took placeon the 13 November 2002.
